Legal Counsel

SMG’s European venues include the Manchester Arena, First Direct Arena, Utilita Arena, Konig Pilsner Arena, P&J Live, The Bridgewater Hall, York Barbican, Bonus Arena, Baths Hall, Plowright Theatre and The Playhouse.

Based in Manchester and reporting to senior Legal Counsel, the role will support the business and its subsidiary catering company, CGC Events, on all commercial legal issues. You will lead on contract renewals for CGC Events, and support larger projects, including the opening of new venues.

Candidates with a background in private practice are encouraged to apply, as well as those with experience of working in house. It is important that the lawyer who joins the team is confident and able to work independently without day to day supervision. We anticipate applications from lawyers who are 3-7 years PQE.

Key Accountabilities:

  • reviewing and drafting supply chain contracts, venue hire contracts, sponsorship agreements and other customer contracts
  • giving ad hoc legal advice to a range of stakeholders
  • assisting with establishing and maintaining a centralised contracts database
  • providing advice on data protection issues and claims
  • supporting the management of claims
  • supporting the mobilisation of new venues
  • providing advice on the impact of new legislation / regulations

Knowledge and Qualifications:

  • LLB 2:1 or above
  • LPC


  • Initiative and enthusiasm
  • Excellent communication and ‘people skills’ – written and verbal
  • Ability to work calmly under pressure
  • Ability to work efficiently with colleagues from across all disciplines
  • Strong IT skills – Microsoft Office
  • Must have good attention to detail
  • Ability to meet deadlines and prioritise tasks

  • PQE 3-7 years (applications outside this bracket are welcome provided the candidate meets the key accountabilities)

Part time – 22.5 hours per week

12 month fixed term contract with a view to making the position permanent
